Music!!

Do you ever have to “break” someone into one of your interests? I was thinking about what my favorite songs are by some artists from talking about it in my cam shows. I always start by listening to some of the “easier” songs then move onto some of the odder songs. I listen to a lot of stuff that needs to be eased into, it seems :P Since we were talking about female singers, I was thinking that I started with Tori Amos’ first album, which is good, but I don’t really listen to it anymore. Tori Amos did a lot of experimentation and got darker and weirder, and I like those albums. But you can’t just listen to Datura without thinking “what the fuck” because it’s really a bizarre song. Maybe I just like weird songs.

I mean, everyone knows that song “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan, but it’s so played out that I’ll uncheck it in iTunes and move onto anything else. But I guess if I were to tell people to listen to Sarah McLachlan for the first time, it would be a good place to start.

There was some tv show that I was listening to, and they started playing Us by Regina Spektor. I like the song a lot, but I thought it was weird that they were playing it, because it’s not so well known. If that was my first experience of her I would think it was bizarre. Better is my favorite song by her, and a little easier to listen to, I think, if you were interested in her :P I’m listening to it now and feeling good :) It’s so uplifting.

I know you guys make fun of my music, but within the female singer genre, I hope I haven’t let anyone down :P

  1. I listened to those Regina Spektor songs and some of the other ones they had on YouTube, but so far I seem to be having trouble really getting into her music. I’m going to try to explore her some more though at some later date…..

And yes “Datura” is an odd song. I think I’m going to have to explore those 2 Tori Amos albums you mentioned at some point too. Now that I think about it, I think I might actually have From The Choirgirl Hotel….. well let me check…….. WAH HA! Yes, I do! It was buried under like fifty million things here….. I’ll definitely have to listen to this again at some point…… hmmm….

  2. I think it makes sense to be more strongly attached to songs you have more control over where you hear them and make your own associations. As far as female singers go, for some, their big hit may be all I need to hear from them. For others, I prefer one of the songs a little off the beaten path.

  3. Ava always so introspective ! You could never let me down. Just poking fun when I rip on your tunes. Teasing you is fun like my little sister (she doesn’t like it much either.

  4. I know exactly how you feel. I can tell that you are definitely a music lover. My opinion on certain songs probably change on a daily basis. I’ve given up trying to get people to like some of the same music that I like. Everybody has their own opinion on what is good and what is bad and there’s nothing wrong with that. Music just brings out emotions in people no matter if it sucks or not. ;) I just like originality and that’s probably why I also like Tori Amos and Regina Spektor. I used to listen to that lilith fair music a lot back in the day. Not so much anymore but I still dig it. ;) I saw Regina Spektor play a few songs at Lollapalooza a couple years ago and that’s when I really started liking her and I bought Begin to Hope. I haven’t listened to it in a while. I still think Jewel’s Pieces of You is my favorite chick album. I don’t care what anybody says, I could never get tired of listening to that album.

  5. I listened to From The Choirgirl Hotel. Is it indeed a very good album. I really like “Spark”, “Black-Dove (January)”, “Raspberry Swirl”, “Northern Lad”, “Jackie’s Strength”, “Cruel”, etc. Now I have to relisten to her other albums and see where I think this ranks among them. I suspect that Boys For Pele is still probably by fav, but this might be #2….. So yeah, I’ll keep you updated! :)

  6. I love Jewel’s Pieces of You…. I’m glad I’m not the only one :)
